5 Ways to Get Ahead of Holiday Shopping

As summer comes to a close and the leaves start to fall, it is time to start saving in preparation for the holiday season. Here are some of the best ways to get way ahead of your holiday shopping:

  1. Start your lists early

Buying the right present can be one of the most stressful parts of the holidays. In order to make sure you get ahead of the game, start brainstorming early and make a list of all potential gift purchases. Asking friends and family for advice often helps narrow down your focus and allows you to hone in on the perfect gift.

  1. Look for deals

By starting the shopping process this early, you have the ability to benefit from “end of season” sales. Labor Day and the beginning of fall means major sales on clothing and accessories. Use this to your advantage and get to the sale rack early.

  1. Don’t be afraid to buy “Pre-owned”

Electronics are some of the most coveted gifts every year. Knowing that you are probably going to need to buy some of the latest tech, see what options are available on the pre-owned market. Websites like e-Bay and Game stop Pre-owned often have the same products for a fraction of the cost.

  1. Budget, budget, budget

Getting your lists assembled early could be the difference between saving and having to spend extra. Once you have your list of presents outlined, you can start to set aside monthly savings to cover the added expense of present buying. Allowing a few months to save will disperse the burden and make the present buying season far more enjoyable. When actually making the purchases, try and spread out the cost across a couple different credit cards to protect your credit from exceeding 30% of your limit. This will protect your credit score throughout the holiday season.

  1. Be creative

Everyone knows that a homemade present can have a lot of sentimental value. If you are creative and like to paint, draw, knit, photograph…etc, that can be a great way to save a little money and give a one of a kind gift. Keep in mind that those types of gifts often take time to create and should be started early to reduce stress later. If you are not creative, as many are not, think outside of the box. Cooking classes, painting lessons, voice coaching, or tennis lessons are always a unique and lasting gift that will have a lasting effect!

Regardless of the gift you choose, the most important thing is that you start to save early. Spread your purchases over the next few months and across multiple credit cards. Payoff those cards off as you go to make sure you are protecting your limits and saving your credit.

Good luck this holiday season and happy shopping!
